And then she told him - or rather tried to tell him - what the lodger was like. Mrs. Bunting was no hand at talking, but one thing she did impress on her husband's mind, namely, that Mr. Sleuth was eccentric, as so many clever people are eccentric - that is, in a harmless way - and that he must be humoured.
"He says he doesn't want to be waited on much," she said at last wiping her eyes, "but I can see he will want a good bit of looking after, all the same, poor gentleman."
And just as the words left her mouth there came the unfamiliar sound of a loud ring. It was that of the drawing-room bell being pulled again and again.
Bunting looked at his wife eagerly. "I think I'd better go up, eh, Ellen?" he said. He felt quite anxious to see their new lodger. For the matter of that, it would be a relief to be doing something again.
"Yes," she answered, "you go up! Don't keep him waiting! I wonder what it is he wants? I said I'd let him know when his supper was ready."

I told you we had met before," said Miss Marple to Lucy. "Sir Henry Clithering is his godfather - a very old friend of mine."
"Would you like to hear, Miss Eyelesbarrow, what my godfather said about her - the first time we met? He described her as just the finest detective God ever made - natural genius cultivated in a suitable soil. He told me never to despise the" – Dermot Craddock paused for a moment to seek for a synonym for “old pussies" – “– er – elderly ladies. He said they could usually tell you what might have happened, what ought to have happened, and even what actually did happen! And," he said, "they can tell you why it happened, he added, that this particular - er - elderly lady - was at the top of the class."

Well!" said Lucy. "That seems to be a testimonial all right."
Miss Marple was pink and confused and looked unusually dithery.
"Dear Sir Henry," she murmured. "Always so kind. Really I'm not at all clever - just, perhaps, a slight knowledge of human nature - living, you know, in a village –"
She added, with more composure:
"Of course, I am somewhat handicapped, by not actually being on the spot. It is so helpful, I always feel, when people remind you of other people - because types are alike everywhere and that is such a valuable guide."

Lucy took Miss Marple home. On her way back a figure stepped out of darkness and stood in the glare of the headlights just as she was about to turn into the back lane. He held up his hand and Lucy recognised Alfred Crackenthorpe.
"That's better," he observed, as he got in. "Brrr, it's cold! I fancied I'd like a nice bracing walk. I didn't. Taken the old lady home all right?"
"Yes. She enjoyed herself very much."
"One could see that. Funny what a taste old ladies have for any kind of society, however dull. And, really, nothing could be duller than Rutherford Hall. Two days here is about as much as I can stand. How do you manage to stick it out, Lucy? Don't mind if I call you Lucy, do you?"

Not at all. I don't find it dull. Of course with me it's not a permanency."
"I've been watching you - you're a smart girl, Lucy. Too smart to waste yourself cooking and cleaning."
"Thank you, but I prefer cooking and cleaning to the office desk."
"So would I. But there are other ways of living. You could be a freelance."
"I am."
"Not this way. I mean, working for yourself, pitting your wits against –"

When we heard the familiar step and the brisk rat-tat,I rose and wentalong to the box. There were four or five letters,I remember. The last one Ilooked at was addressed in printed characters. "Poirot,"I cried......My voice died away. "It has come?Open it,Hastings.Quickly.Every moment may be needed.Wemust make our plans." I tore open the letter (Poirot for once did not reproach me withuntidiness)and extracted the printed sheet. "Read it,"said Poirot. I read aloud: Poor Mr Poirot,-Not so good at these little criminal matters as youthought yourself, are you?Rather past your prime, perhaps?Let us see if youcan do any better this time. This time it's an easy one.Churston on the30th.Do try and do something about it!It's a bit dull having it all my wonway, you know!

Good hunting.Ever yours,A B C "Churston,"I said, jumping to our owncopy of an A B C."Let's see where it is." "Hastings,"Poirot's voice came sharply and interrupted me."When wasthat letter written? Is there a date on it?" I glanced at the letter in my hand. "Written on the 27th,"I announced. "Did I hear you aright,Hastings?Did he give the date of the murder asthe 30th?" "That's right.Let me see,that's-""Bon Dieu,Hastings-do you notrealise?Today is the 30th." His eloquent hand pointed to the calendar on the wall.I caught up thedaily paper to confirm it. "But why-how-"I stammered.

Poirot did not reply. Mr Cust said: "Everyone's had has been against me-always." "Even when you were a child?" Mr Cust seemed to consider. "No-no-not exactly then.My mother was very fond of me.But she wasambitious-terribly ambitious. That's why she gave me those ridiculousnames. She had some absurd idea that I'd cut a figure in the world. She wasalways urging me to assert myself-talking about will-power......sayinganyone could be master of his fate......she said I could do anything!" He was silent for a minute.

"She was quite wrong,of course.I realized that myself quite soon.Iwasn't the sort of person to get on in life.I was always doing foolishthings-making myself look ridiculous. And I was timid-afraid of people.I hada bad time at school-the boys found out my Christian names-they used totease me about them......I did very badly at school-in games and work andeverything." He shook his head. "Just as well poor mother died. She'd have been disappointed......Evenwhen I was at the Commercial College I was stupid-it took me longer to learntyping and shorthand than anyone else. And yet I didn't feel stupid-if youknow what I mean."

Famous artist painting When the woman was called upon to testify before the justice of the peace, she swore that the small prisoner at the bar was the person who had committed the theft; there was none able to show the contrary, so the king stood convicted. The bundle was now unrolled, and when the contents proved to be a plump little dressed pig, the judge looked troubled, while Hendon turned pale, and his body was thrilled with an electric shiver of dismay; but the king remained unmoved, protected by his ignorance.

The judge meditated, during an ominous pause, then turned to the woman, with question:
"What dost thou hold this property to be worth?"
The woman courtesied and replied:
"Three shillings and eightpence, your worship-I could not abate a penny and set forth the value honestly."
The justice glanced around uncomfortably upon the crowd, then nodded to the constable and said

And, somehow, that little speech of hers amused her father so much that he quite cheered up. Bunting had been very dull and quiet all that afternoon.
"It won't take me ten minutes to make myself respectable again," said the young man rather ruefully.

His host and hostess, looking at him eagerly, furtively, both came to the conclusion that he had been unsuccessful - that he had failed, that is, in getting any information worth having. And though, in a sense, they all had a pleasant tea together, there was an air of constraint, even of discomfort, over the little party.

During the afternoon Bunting bought papers recklessly - in fact, he must have spent the best part of six-pence. But in spite of all the supposed and suggested clues, there was nothing - nothing at all new to read, less, in fact than ever before.
The police, it was clear, were quite at a loss, and Mrs. Bunting began to feel curiously better, less tired, less ill, less - less terrified than she had felt through the morning.
Famous artist painting
And then something happened which broke with dramatic suddenness the quietude of the day.
They had had their tea, and Bunting was reading the last of the papers he had run out to buy, when suddenly there came a loud, thundering, double knock at the door.
Mrs. Bunting looked up, startled. "Why, whoever can that be?" she said.

Those Parisians who flocked to the Assize Court at Versailles, to be present at the trial of what was known as the "Mystery of The Yellow Room," will certainly remember the terrible crush at the Saint-Lazare station. The ordinary trains were so full that special trains had to be made up. The article in the "Epoque" had so excited the populace that discussion was rife everywhere even to the verge of blows.
Famous artist painting
Partisans of Rouletabille fought with the supporters of Frederic Larsan. Curiously enough the excitement was due less to the fact that an innocent man was in danger of a wrongful conviction than to the interest taken in their own ideas as to the Mystery of The Yellow Room. Each had his explanation to which each held fast. Those who explained the crime on Frederic Larsan's theory would not admit that there could be any doubt as to the perspicacity of the popular detective.

"I hold my breath. I mount the ladder. I am on the uppermost rung of it, and with my left hand seize hold of the window-sill. In this moment of approaching success, I feel my heart beating wildly. I put my revolver between my teeth. A quick spring, and I shall be on the window-ledge.

It grated on the wall and fell. But, already, my knees were touching the window-sill, and, by a movement quick as lightning, I got on to it.

opened the trap, grabbed the Marionette by the collar, and carried him to the house as if he were a puppy. When he reached the yard in front of the house, he flung him to the ground, put a foot on his neck, and said to him roughly: "It is late now and it's time for bed. Tomorrow we'll settle matters. In the meantime, since my watchdog died today, you may take his place and guard my henhouse."
No sooner said than done. He slipped a dog collar around Pinocchio's neck and tightened it so that it would not come off. A long iron chain was tied to the collar. The other end of the chain was nailed to the wall.

tonight it should happen to rain," said the Farmer, "you can sleep in that little doghouse near-by, where you will find plenty of straw for a soft bed. It has been Melampo's bed for three years, and it will be good enough for you. And if, by any chance, any thieves should come, be sure to bark!"
After this last warning, the Farmer went into the house and closed the door and barred it.

When we were in complete darkness, he lit a wax vesta, and asked Daddy Jacques to move to the middle of the chamber with it to the place where the night-light was burning that night.

Daddy Jacques who was in his stockings - he usually left his sabots in the vestibule - entered The Yellow Room with his bit of a vesta. We vaguely distinguished objects overthrown on the floor, a bed in one corner, and, in front of us, to the left, the gleam of a looking-glass hanging on the wall, near to the bed.
"That will do! - you may now open the blinds," said Rouletabille.

“你怎么这样啊,要抱抱你未婚妻去。”很难受你知道吗?又坐不稳。
“你放心。”他轻轻吻着我的面颊。“你在吃醋吗?我真高兴。这就是你送我的寿礼吧。”
我放什么心?我既不是林妹妹,你也不是宝哥哥好不好?
“你不是要听歌吗?放开我,我才唱。” Famous artist painting
