Robert! - Robert!"
We recognised the voice of Mademoiselle Stangerson. We all shuddered. Larsan himself turned pale. Monsieur Darzac, in response to the cry, had flown back into the room.
The magistrate, the gendarme, and Larsan followed closely after. Rouletabille and I remained on the threshold. It was a heart-breaking sight that met our eyes. Mademoiselle Stangerson, with a face of deathly pallor, had risen on her bed, in spite of the restraining efforts of two doctors and her father. She was holding out her trembling arms towards Robert Darzac, on whom Larsan and the gendarme had laid hands. Her distended eyes saw - she understood - her lips seemed to form a word, but nobody made it out; and she fell back insensible.
Monsieur Darzac was hurried out of the room and placed in the vestibule to wait for the vehicle Larsan had gone to fetch. We were all overcome by emotion and even Monsieur de Marquet had tears in his eyes. Rouletabille took advantage of the opportunity to say to Monsieur Darzac:

"I take my company to London for six weeks. We play at Torquay, at Bournemouth, at Eastbourne, at somewhere else I forget and at Hammersmith. Then we come back to France, but Anna - she does not come. She sends message only that she leaves the company, that she goes to live with her husband's family - some nonsense of that kind. I did not think it is true, myself. I think it more likely that she has met a man, you understand."
Inspector Craddock nodded. He perceived that that was what Madame Joliet would invariably think.

And it is no loss to me. I do not care. I can get girls just as good and better to come and dance, so I shrug the shoulders and do not think of it any more. Why should I? They are all the same, these girls, mad about men."
"What dates was this?"
"When we return to France? It was – yes - the Sunday before Christmas. And Anna she leaves two - or is it three - days before that? I cannot remember exactly…. But the end of the week at Hammersmith we have to dance without her - and it means rearranging things…. It was very naughty of her – but these girls - the moment they meet a man they are all the same. Only I say to everybody. ‘Zut, I do not take her back, that one!’"

"I suppose he never received a letter or letters signed A B C?" "A B C?"She shook her head."No,I'm sure he didn't." "He didn't mention having seen anyone hanging about during his eveningwalks lately?" "No.He never mentioned anything of the kind." "And you yourself have noticed no strangers?" "Not exactly hanging about.Of course, there are a lot of people what youmight call wandering about at this time of year. One often meets peoplestrolling with an aimless look across the golf links or down the lanes otthe sea.In the same way, practically everyone one sees this time of year isa stranger."

Poirot nodded thoughtfully. Inspector Crome asked to be taken over the ground of Sir Carmichael'snightly walk.Franklin Clarke led the way through the french window, and MissGrey accompanied us. She and I were a little behind the others. "All this must have been a terrible shock to you all,"I said. "It seems quite unbelievable.I had gone to bed last night when thepolice rang up.I heard voices downstairs and at last I came out and askedwhat was the matter.Deveril and Mr Clarke were just setting out withlanterns."Mary Cassatt painting

"Be quiet, mademoiselle.I am for the truth,I am!I have done with lies. Supposing,I say, that A B C did not commit the second crime. It tookplace, remember,in the early hours of the 25th-the day he had arrived forthe crime.Supposing someone had forestalled him? What in those circumstanceswould he do?Commit a second murder,or lie low and accept the first as akind of macabre present?" "M.Poirot!"said Megan."That's a fantastic thought! All the crimes musthave been commited by the same person!" He took no notice of her and went steadily on:

"Such a hypothesis had the merit of explaining one fact-the discrepancybetween the personality of Alexander Bonaparte Cust (who could never havemade the click with any girl)and the personality of Betty Barnard'smurderer. And it has been know, before now, that would-be murderers havetaken advantage of the crimes committed by other people. Not all the crimesof Jack the Ripper were committed by Jack the Ripper, for instance. So far,so good. "But then i came up against a definite difficulty.

of flowers and fruit trees and sunshine to cheer them, and had they not felt so sorry for the poor Scarecrow, they could have been very happy.
They walked along as fast as they could, Dorothy only stopping once to pick a beautiful flower; and after a time the Tin Woodman cried out: "Look!"
Then they all looked at the river and saw the Scarecrow perched upon his pole in the middle of the water, looking very lonely and sad.
Mary Cassatt painting
"What can we do to save him?" asked Dorothy.
The Lion and the Woodman both shook their heads, for they did not know. So they sat down upon the bank and gazed wistfully at the Scarecrow until a Stork flew by, who, upon seeing them, stopped to rest at the water's edge.
"Who are you and where are you going?" asked the Stork.

They were all tired out when they reached the shore at last and stepped off upon the pretty green grass, and they also knew that the stream had carried them a long way past the road of yellow brick that led to the Emerald City.
"What shall we do now?" asked the Tin Woodman, as the Lion lay down on the grass to let the sun dry him.
"We must get back to the road, in some way," said Dorothy.
Mary Cassatt painting
"The best plan will be to walk along the riverbank until we come to the road again," remarked the Lion.
So, when they were rested, Dorothy picked up her basket and they started along the grassy bank, to the road from which the river had carried them. It was a lovely country, with plenty

And old Sanctum Sanctorum was truly sorry your Highness came not back," said Hendon; "I saw it in his face."
"Marry, I will never doubt that!" said the king-and then told his own story; after which Hendon was sorry he had not destroyed the archangel.
Mary Cassatt painting
During the last day of the trip, Hendon's spirits were soaring. His tongue ran constantly. He talked about his old father, and his brother Arthur, and told of many things which illustrated their high and generous characters; he went into loving frenzies over his Edith, and was so glad-hearted that he was even able to say some gentle and brotherly things about Hugh.

Was it possible that their place was being watched - already? He thought it only too likely. Bunting, like Mrs. Bunting, credited the police with almost supernatural powers, especially since he had paid that visit to Scotland Yard.
But to Bunting's amazement, and, yes, relief, it was his lodger who suddenly loomed up in the dim light.
Mary Cassatt painting
Mr. Sleuth must have been stooping down, for his tall, lank form had been quite concealed till he stepped forward from behind the low wall on to the flagged path leading to the front door.
The lodger was carrying a brown paper parcel, and, as he walked along, the new boots he was wearing creaked, and the tap-tap of hard nail-studded heels rang out on the flat-stones of the narrow path.

"Mr. Sleuth slept most of yesterday, and all last night," she answered quickly. "As it is, I study him over-much; it's a long, long time since I've done this staircase down."
All the time she was engaged in doing the hall, Mrs. Bunting left the sitting-room door wide open.
Mary Cassatt painting
That was a queer thing of her to do, but Bunting didn't like to get up and shut her out, as it were. Still, try as he would, he couldn't read with any comfort while all that noise was going on. He had never known Ellen make such a lot of noise before. Once or twice he looked up and frowned rather crossly.
There came a sudden silence, and he was startled to see that. Ellen was standing in the doorway, staring at him, doing nothing.

The President nodded ironically:
"If the Advocate-General attaches importance to the deposition of Monsieur Joseph Rouletabille, I see no reason why this witness should not give us the name of the murderer."
A pin drop could have been heard. Rouletabille stood silent looking sympathetically at Darzac, who, for the first time since the opening of the trial, showed himself agitated.
Mary Cassatt painting
Well," cried the President, "we wait for the name of the murderer." Rouletabille, feeling in his waistcoat pocket, drew his watch and, looking at it, said:
"Monsieur President, I cannot name the murderer before half-past six o'clock!"
Loud murmurs of disappointment filled the room. Some of the lawyers were heard to say: "He's making fun of us!"
The President in a stern voice, said:

Meanwhile, the little boat, tossed about by the angry waters, appeared and disappeared in the waves. And Pinocchio, standing on a high rock, tired out with searching, waved to him with hand and cap and even with his nose.
It looked as if Geppetto, though far away from the shore, recognized his son, for he took off his cap and waved also. He seemed to be trying to make everyone understand that he would come back if he were able, but the sea was so heavy that he could do nothing with his oars. Suddenly a huge wave came and the boat disappeared.

They waited and waited for it, but it was gone.
"Poor man!" said the fisher folk on the shore, whispering a prayer as they turned to go home.
Just then a desperate cry was heard. Turning around, the fisher folk saw Pinocchio dive into the sea and heard him cry out:
"I'll save him! I'll save my father!"
The Marionette, being made of wood, floated easily along and swam like a fish in the rough water. Now and again he disappeared only to reappear once more. In a twinkling, he was far away from land. At last he was completely lost to view.
"Poor boy!" cried the fisher folk on the shore, and again they mumbled a few prayers, as they returned home.

but there was that window through which the monkey, the perpetrator of the murder, could slip away! But here, there can be no question of an opening of any sort. The door was fastened, and through the window blinds, secure as they were, not even a fly could enter or get out."

True, true," assented Rouletabille as he kept on drying his forehead, which seemed to be perspiring less from his recent bodily exertion than from his mental agitation. "Indeed, it's a great, a beautiful, and a very curious mystery."

Mary Cassatt painting

Mary Cassatt painting

Mary Cassatt painting

Mary Cassatt painting

Mary Cassatt painting
Mary Cassatt painting
