Oh,'' he said doubtfully.
"He said, 'Think of a hound and you'll never forget my name,'" and Mrs. Bunting smiled.
When he got to the door, Bunting turned round: "We'll now be able to pay young Chandler back some o' that thirty shillings. I am glad." She nodded; her heart, as the saying is, too full for words.
And then each went about his and her business - Bunting out into the drenching fog, his wife down to her cold kitchen.
The lodger's tray was soon ready; everything upon it nicely and daintily arranged. Mrs. Bunting knew how to wait upon a gentleman.
Just as the landlady was going up the kitchen stair, she suddenly remembered Mr. Sleuth's request for a Bible. Putting the tray down in the hall, she went into her sitting-room and took up the Book; but when back in the hall she hesitated a moment as to whether it was worth while to make two journeys. But, no, she thought she could manage; clasping the large, heavy volume under her arm, and taking up the tray, she walked slowly up the staircase.

¡¡¡¡He was doing it now, vociferating, bellowing, waving his arms, and cursing like a fiend, and all because of a disagreement with another hunter as to whether a seal-pup knew instinctively how to swim. He held that it did; that it could swim the moment it was born. The other hunter, Latimer, a lean Yankee-looking fellow, with shrewd, narrow-slitted eyes, held otherwise; held that the seal-pup was born on the land for no other reason than that it could not swim;
oil painting
that its mother was compelled to teach it to swim, as birds were compelled to teach their nestlings how to fly. ¡¡¡¡For the most part, the remaining four hunters leaned on the table or lay in their bunks and left the discussion to the two antagonists. But they were supremely interested, for every little while they ardently took sides, and sometimes all were talking at once, till their voices surged back and forth in waves of sound like mimic thunder-rolls in the confined space. Childish and immaterial as the topic was, the quality of their reasoning was still more childish and immaterial. In truth

So old?" said Miss Marple smiling a little. "But Dr. Quimper isn't much over forty, I should say, though he's going grey on the temples, and it's obvious that he's longing for some kind of home life; and Emma Crackenthorpe is under forty – not too old to marry and have a family. The doctor's wife died quite young having a baby, so I have heard."
"I believe she did. Emma said something about it one day."
"He must be lonely," said Miss Marple. "A busy hardworking doctor needs a wife – someone sympathetic - not too young."

"Listen, darling," said Lucy. "Are we investigating crime, or are we match-making?"
Miss Marple twinkled.
"I'm afraid I am rather romantic. Because I am an old maid, perhaps. You know, dear Lucy, that, as far as I am concerned, you have fulfilled your contract. If you really want a holiday abroad before taking up your next engagement, you would have time still for a short trip."

Taking his suitcase from me firmly,he took the packing into his ownhands. He explained that we were to take the letter and envelope to Paddingtonwith us.Someone from Scotland Yard would meet us there. When we arrived on the platform the first person we saw was InspectorCrome. He answered Poirot's look of inquiry. "No news as yet.All men available are on the look-out.All persons whosename begins with Care being warned by phone when possible. There's just achance.Where's the letter?" Poirot gave it to him. He examined it,swearing softly under his breath. "Of all the damned luck. The stars in their courses fight for thefellow."

"You don't think,"I suggested,"that it was done on purpose?" Crome shook his head. "No.He's got his rules-crazy rules-and abides by them.Fair warning.Hemakes a point of that. That's where his boastfulness comes in.I wondernow-I'd almost bet the chap drinks White Horse Whisky." "Ah,c'est ingenieux,ca!"said Poirot, driven to admiration in spite ofhimself."He prints the letter and the bottle is in front of him." "That's the way of it,"said Crome."We've all of us done much the samething one time or another, unconsciously copied something that's just underthe eye.He started off White and went on horse instead of haven......" The inspector,we found, was also travelling by the train.

"Eightpence, indeed! Thou"lt do no such thing. It cost me three shillings and eightpence, good honest coin of the last reign, that old Harry that's just dead ne"er touched nor tampered with. A fig for thy eightpence!"

"There, there, dear heart, say no more, I am content. Give me the eightpence, and hold thy peace about the matter."
The woman went off crying; Hendon slipped back into the courtroom, and the constable presently followed, after hiding his prize in some convenient place. The justice wrote a while longer, then read the king a wise and kindly lecture, and sentenced him to a short imprisonment in the common jail, to be followed by a public flogging. The astounded king opened his mouth and was probably going to order the good judge to be beheaded on the spot; but he caught a warning sign from Hendon

"She's just taken the tray downstairs."

"Yes, father," came her eager, happy voice.

He turned and came back to his wife. "Ellen, is the lodger in? I haven't heard him moving about. Now mind what I says, please! I don't want Daisy to be mixed up with him."
"Mr. Sleuth don't seem very well to-day," answered Mrs. Bunting quietly. "'Tain't likely I should let Daisy have anything to do with him. Why, she's never even seen him. 'Tain't likely I should allow her to begin waiting on him now."

Young Chandler ruefully shut the front door. "I didn't mean to upset her like this," he said, looking foolish; "'twas just my silly nonsense, Mr. Bunting." And together they helped her into the sitting-room.
But, once there, poor Mrs. Bunting went on worse than ever; she threw her black apron over her face, and began to sob hysterically.

'Twas stupid of me to be so taken aback. But, there, that murder that's happened close by, it's just upset me - upset me altogether to-day."

I was lucky enough to be called early in the trial, so that I was then able to watch and be present at almost the whole of the proceedings.
The court was so crowded that many lawyers were compelled to find seats on the steps. Behind the bench of justices were representatives from other benches.

Monsieur Robert Darzac stood in the prisoner's dock between policemen, tall, handsome, and calm. A murmur of admiration rather than of compassion greeted his appearance. He leaned forward towards his counsel, Maitre Henri Robert, who, assisted by his chief secretary, Maitre Andre Hesse, was busily turning over the folios of his brief. Modern Art Painting

Modern Art Painting

Modern Art Painting

Modern Art Painting
